Trying to prove her worth, a rookie police officer is brought on a dangerous mission to safeguard a prisoner transfer to a remote prison on a remote island facility. When she and the rest of the team arrive, they find the prisoners stationed on the island have broken out and run free over the island, killing everyone they come across on their way to freedom, forcing her to rely on not just her skills but her inmate charge to stop them and get to safety.
Review:
For the most part, this was a lot of fun and had a lot to like about it. The fun storyline, at least once you get past the unbelievable part involving how they manage to get out of custody and run wild on the island with no supervision or authority, works incredibly in the film’s favor. It allows for a constrained stream of brutal, hand-to-hand brawling or martial arts combat, keeping this one moving along at a frantic clip. Moving along to the series of ambushes, brawls, and dirty fighting using their surroundings to try to quell the uprising in the forest around them, this is bloody and frantic, which makes for a generally solid time moving from one hard-hitting encounter to the next.
Again, the problem here is that the story is hard to follow coherently with no explanation for what’s happening. The main story involving the outbreak in the prison, what the purpose is, or what the whole escape plan entails, as we’re just thrust into the break with no explanation and are expected to go from there on such a flimsy story to get everything going. The other slight factor here is the inexcusably bad effects work for the gore featured, which is some of the most obnoxiously bad CGI that never once looks realistic and is far more off-putting by taking you out of the scene than anything else. Still, these don’t bring it down that much, even if they are obviously detrimental factors.
Overview: ***.5/5
A likable indie action film that might have some issues, there’s still a lot to like here with the rest of the flaws on display keeping this down just enough from the upper spots in the genre. Those with an interest in this style or approach, as well as fans of the creative crew, will have the most to like here, while those turned off by those factors will want to heed caution.
