Review:
This was a massively disappointing genre effort without much going for it. About the only positive to be had here is the atmosphere of the world being set up here, as that comes together with a lot of intrigue. The whole thing about the world being set up around the whole accident that opens the way for them to come into our world, and the chaos that spawns from their takeover as they battle mankind, turning it into a dystopian, post-apocalyptic nightmare that features mankind as a series of clustered bits on the outskirts struggling to survive in this type of environment presented here. The central relationship involving the father teaching her survival tactics or trying to bring about a series of tales about how the world used to be before everything happened gives this a solid chance to be worthwhile by creating a strong dramatic anchor at the center of the film.
Outside of that, though, there’s very little to like here. The pace here is just dreadful, sucking the energy out of anything, offering up such a lethargic tempo and energy with what’s going on at the time. So little happens during the film as we’re stuck with endless training montages or just never-ending talks about how the world used to be that it becomes a slog to get through all these scenes where nothing happens for such long stretches of the film that it never has a chance to do anything. We rarely get any kind of information on the creatures, what they’re about, or how their society works, as they barely seem like a threat for most of the film, especially with how terrible they look due to the lackluster CGI presented. Coupled with the rushed final,e where it just seems to end right when it seemed like something interesting was about to happen, these factors all bring this one down overall.
Overview: */5
A somewhat watchable if overall underwhelming genre effort, this one manages to have enough to like that it’s not a total waste, but the overall crippling negatives on display do hammer this one down quite heavily. Those with an interest in the subject matter or who are fans of the creative crew will have the most to like here, while most others out there should outright avoid it.
