Plot:
Traveling through the Arizona countryside, a wagon train full of desperately-needed medical supplies for a frontier town falls victim to an Apache attack, leaving one survivor to help guide it to its final destination. When he realizes that he needs the assistance of a trio of dangerous criminals more interested in surviving the harsh terrain than seeing the mission through, he’s torn between following through on his mission to help or aligning with the extra man-power they represent, and once the group accidentally kills an Apache scout, they find themselves forced to band together to survive the terrible odds before them.
Review:
Overall, this was an intriguing if ultimately flawed Western. Most of the film’s positives here come in the form of its rather engaging central premise that allows for a slew of atmospheric tactics and suspenseful touches to take place. The central idea involving the supply wagon needing to get to its destination after the ambush and needing to use the gathered group of outlaws that are too unpredictable to be trusted more than they have to be together, the more in danger they remain, forcing the group to be stuck together for the duration of the scenario. This creates an intriguing setup involving the team of unlikely figures forced to be together and bring themselves together to complete the mission, leading to a fun time with the different interactions here offering the kind of generally fun interplay that keeps this intriguing over what they’re going to be like the more they stay together.
Otherwise, there’s not much to this one since far too much of the gargantuan running time is filled with terminally plodding and lifeless scenes that don’t belong there. Featuring far too much in the way of action for what takes place throughout here. Far too much of the film’s running time is spent on droning conversations and endless amounts of silence as the ground stares off into the wilderness, trying to appear contemplative about the situation. None of it is all that interesting or keeps the film from appearing any less obvious about what’s going on, as the predictable story is easy to guess, so instead it’s left with an endless assortment of scenes making it feel sluggish, bland, and not very exciting due to the lack of action in such a long running time. All told, these all manage to keep this one down.
Overview: *.5/5
A watchable if still somewhat sluggish genre effort, this is a generally troubling throwback that might’ve worked at a shorter length to not let the obvious flaws be as impactful. Those with an appreciation for this style of the genre or who are fans of the creative crew will have the most to like here, while most others out there should heed caution.
