Plot:
Newly released after seven years in prison, a man only wishes to return to Antwerp’s Paradise apartment complex and spend time with his ailing mother. But Paradise no longer lives up to its name as a ruthless drug lord has taken over, placed himself at the top floor, and made Paradise his personal fortress. As soon as he returns, a police raid of Paradise begins that pits the outmatched and outgunned police against a private army. With a splintered-off rookie cop as an ally and his only desire to protect his mother and get her out of Paradise before things get worse, the two are now going to take on the thugs and retake floor by floor, flight by flight, and fight by fight.
Review:
This was a spectacular effort with quite a lot of effective elements. A lot of that is centered around the simplistic and engaging setup that makes everything throughout here come together incredibly well. With the central storyline offering up enough emotional engagement with his release from prison and desire to return to his home where he can help keep his ailing mother safe from others, this gets him there at the building and with enough reason to fight them off as he tries to protect his mother. With the secondary storyline about the police group being so overwhelmed and unable to handle what’s going on that they require his help to get the mission accomplished, there’s a fun series of bits here involving the race to stop the various criminal gangs holding the building captive. We don’t get to know them as well as we should, with the leader getting just a name and not much else, including why this particular building, how they overcome it at the expense of the other residents yet left the mother and her caretaker, among others, still there, or much of anything with the henchmen, but it’s the main quibble against this one.
Aside from that, the series of spectacular, high-energy action here is where this scores the most fun. Mixing up a slew of confrontations here that range from hand-to-hand fistfights, hand weapons, and hardcore gunplay that leaves this one bloody, hard-hitting, and incredibly varied in its approach, there’s a lot to like with the way this brings about the action. The opening police raid on the building that shows their inability to read the situation and how out-of-their-element they really are makes for a strong start, while the series of attacks that take place within the bowels of the apartment serve to offer up plenty of brutal confrontations as the SWAT team accomplishes small victories over the gang. When they get overwhelmed and beaten, forcing him to become a more active participant in helping stop them to save his mother, the action is impressive and becomes more focused on hardcore brawls and fistfights that leave the film with some fun elements. The finale offers a slightly underwhelming factor where it never has the emotional catharsis of fighting off the villain by himself, and we’re left with the henchman fight, but that’s a minor issue here.

An exceptionally enjoyable and worthwhile Action effort, there’s plenty to like here that manages to give this the series of positive points needed to make for a wholly hard-hitting experience. Those with a curiosity about this style or approach or who are fans of the genre will want to give this a shot, while most others out there should heed caution with this one.
