Plot:
As drugs overrun the city, a cop is forced into action to track down the source of the drugs flowing into the community, which is hampered by his blindness, impeding his ability to work. Summoning his skillset and forced to use the entirety of his wits to outlast the criminal gang, he and his new partner set out to stop them before it's too late.
Review:
Overall, this was a generally disappointing grindhouse action throwback. The wild premise, trying to play up a buddy cop action film where one of the cops is blind and forced to use his other skills to try to get the job done, serves as a cheesy starting point that tries to offer up a different tone and flavor than what's usually expected here. The fact that he has to use his other senses to try to do his job, from talking his way out of escalating situations or relying on sound to sense someone approaching when he's stuck in a hostile situation. This is quite useful at building up a credible world where a person with this disadvantage can level the playing field, as the action scenes of him taking criminals down, outsmarting them after being kidnapped, or finally forging a bond with his partner to save the day.
This wouldn't be all that bad if the film had played up a bit more action in the proceedings instead of being a more subdued and laidback type of genre effort. Without much in the way of big confrontations or action setpieces until the end, as even the abduction sequence comes off without a lot of fanfare or other factors that generate any kind of action or spectacle in what's going on, the pacing here takes quite a while to get going. Focusing on his snappy attitude and unlikable approach that keeps his disability from connecting with anyone else from getting close to him, rather than action, makes this feel quite sluggish and slow-going as a result, and when utilized alongside the cheap, low-budget indie presentation that drips off the screen every chance it gets, are what brings this down overall.
Overview: **/5
A disappointing if somewhat watchable genre effort, there’s enough to enjoy here that it’s not a complete waste, but this does have too many flaws to be much more than just a disappointing genre effort. Those with an appreciation for this style or approach will have the most to like here, while most others out there should heed extreme caution.
